Born in Tenerife (Spain), Borja Romero González is a conductor specializing in music for wind ensembles and is one of the first Canarian conductors with specific professional training in wind band conducting. His career has developed across several European countries, particularly Spain, the Netherlands, and Italy.
He received his training in Zaragoza, where he obtained a degree in Orchestral Conducting with Miquel Rodrigo and Borja Quintas, and in Choral Conducting with Elena Ruiz. His particular interest in wind band music led him to Maastricht (the Netherlands), where he completed the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Wind Band Conducting under the guidance of Jos Zegers, concluding his studies with a concert conducting the Banda Real de la Marina de los Países Bajos. He later completed a postgraduate programme in Wind Band Conducting in Turin with Lorenzo Della Fonte as his mentor.
He is the appointed conductor of the Banda de Lalín (Pontevedra, Spain) and director of its music school. He is currently principal conductor of the Dutch orchestras Amicitia Vilt, St. Caecilia Eygelshoven, and St. Caecilia Spekholzerheide. Previously, he served as principal conductor of Agrupación Musical Delicias (Zaragoza, Spain) and assistant conductor of Philharmonie Sittard (the Netherlands).
His qualities as a conductor have been recognized in various international competitions held in Spain, Italy, and Poland. His distinctions include the Premio Internacional de Dirección "Bilbao Musika" (Bilbao, 2024), the II Premio del Concorso Internazionale per Direttori d'Orchestra di Fiati "Frederick Fennell" (Sicily, 2024), and the II Premio del Concurso Internacional de Dirección Orquestal "Reveriano Soutullo" (Santiago de Compostela, 2025).
As a guest conductor, he has collaborated with renowned ensembles, including the Banda Municipal de Música de Bilbao. During the 2026/27 season, he will make his debut with the Banda Municipal de Santiago de Compostela and the Gran Canaria Wind Orchestra.
In addition to his conducting activity, he develops a creative career as a composer of wind band music, with several of his works receiving national recognition. His compositions have been premiered and recorded by leading ensembles such as the Banda Sinfónica Municipal de Sevilla, the Sociedad Filarmónica Nuestra Señora de la Oliva de Salteras, the Banda de Música Maestro Tejera, the Sociedad Filarmónica Nuestra Señora del Carmen de Salteras, the Banda María Santísima de la Victoria (Las Cigarreras), and the Agrupación Musical Orotava, among others.
Alongside his musical career, his background in journalism has allowed him to develop research activity in the field of musicology. He is the author of several published works on the genre of processional march, to which he has dedicated a significant part of his research.
